Pretend
    under canopy of stars

    and blanket of night

    could we pretend

    to know love . . .

    in the heat of battle

    over trespass and wrong

    could we pretend

    to forgive and amend . . .

as a snail slows under its load

as an ant carries a berry

    when hearts bear heavy secrets

    could we pretend there’s  purpose . . .

    if creation waits

    for a curse to be lifted . . .

    what harm if  we step

    beyond pretend
